Very nice NYTimes interactive on corporate taxes

A few random observations:

The numbers are totals from a six year period from 2007 to 2012.

"Effective tax rate" is simply total taxes paid divided by total profit. Some companies that lost money still paid a lot of tax, the extreme example being AIG, whose net six-year profit was negative $83 billion but still paid $8 billion in taxes (a weird case, of course, because the US government owned them for a bit in the middle there). Citigroup had a net loss of $24 billion over the period but paid $20 billion in taxes.

Just recently Apple got reamed for paying less tax than some guys thought they should, but their effective tax rate is roughly comparable to IBM, Google, GE, and Coca Cola, and well above Verizon, Boeing, Amazon, or Ford.

A year or two ago there was a lot of yakking about how we needed to close tax "loopholes" for Big Oil. All the blather never resulted in any change, but Big Oil seems to have been paying a lot of tax already. ConocoPhilips paid $58 billion in taxes on $79 billion profit, Chevron paid $85 billion on $220 billion, and ExxonMobil $146 billion on $395 billion. Unfortunately the chart only includes S&P 500 companies, so Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum do not appear.

It's been over a month since the last Anthraquinonoid of the Week, so this is long overdue.

The anthraquinonoid of the week is rufigallol.

Following up a conversation from a couple of weeks ago:

The Propaganda Due Masonic Lodge

The Clandestine Committee of the Western Union's Operation Gladio

I thought other people who were not involved with the previous conversation might find these of interest nonetheless.

The WoUtNW is Zeitgeber.

Unfortunately it turns out that the first Horrible Recipe of the Week was not the last. It was posted on a Saturday, which is not very good for an X of the Week; X of the Week postings should be on Sundays or Mondays, obviously. What'smoreover, some callous reprobate went and asked me to repost the recipe with measures adjusted for his actual ingredients on hand. Since that is topologically impossible, an entirely new recipe is required to accommodate this amoral recidivist's sadistic whims. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he were a serial killer or maybe even a geneticist.

Thus we must endure another terrible, terrible recipe.
Dear God no please make it stop )

Here is the first and hopefully the only Horrible Recipe of the Week.

The WoUtNW is jargogle, verb, "to befuddle or mess up".

Whether all you say have any thing more in it than this, I appeal to my readers; and should willingly do it to you, did I not fear, that the jumbling of those good and plausible words in your head, of "sufficient evidence", "consider as one ought", etc. might a little jargogle your thoughts and lead you hoodwinked the round of your own beaten circle. This is a danger those are much exposed to, who accustom themselves to relative and doubtful terms, and so put together, that though asunder they signify something, yet when their meaning comes to be cast up as they are placed, it amounts to just nothing.

Accusations of racism are very serious. The gravity of the accusation requires a stricter standard of evidence. If I'm accusing someone of disliking okra, I don't need a logically airtight argument bolstered by multiple independent factual sources. If I'm accusing someone of racism, though, I have an obligation to be damn sure I'm right before saying anything. Serious allegations require far more than just bald assertion without warrant.

Imagining ourselves capable of seeing inside someone's mind and perceiving racism for which there is no objective evidence is incredibly arrogant.

The WoUtNW is bricolage.

This is not a spoiler alert. Why would you even think that? )
