In November, voters will decide whether non-citizens—including illegal immigrants—can vote in San Francisco school-board elections. The city's Board of Supervisors decided to put the measure on the ballot in a 9-2 vote in late July. Over half of the city's students come from immigrant parents, and advocates say the measure will allow more residents to get involved in their children’s education, improving the performance of both students and schools. Opponents argue that the measure would dilute the privileges of citizenship and the incentives to become a citizen. Even if the measure passes, it could face a legal challenge, since state law mandates that only citizens may vote. Some supporters believe a strong showing at the polls may spur legislative change. In August, the state legislature will debate giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
