Self-Indulgent Patriotism
Nov. 4th, 2004 01:05 pmYou see a lot of American flags all over the place these days. I suppose they're reminding me of which country I'm in, in case I forget. It seems that if you insist on ostentatious displays of "patriotism," you should at least know what the federal laws are regarding all these flags you're sticking all over the place.
Don't fly a US flag at night if unilluminated.
Unless you have an all-weather flag, take it down when it's raining.
The flag cannot be used in situations where easily damaged or solied or subject to impact (e.g., on an athletic uniform, on the outside of your car, etc.)
If the flag gets damaged, soiled, or faded, stop flying it over your gas station or your garage or whatever stupid place you've put it.
So quit it.
(And if you want to display a symbol of the US, the flag is pretty content-free. Try something meaningful, like the Constitution.)
