Why on this night
Apr. 7th, 2012 09:56 amOn all other nights we ask a variety of questions, to most of which we do not know the answers. Why on this night do we always ask the same four questions whose answers we could probably recite verbatim ourselves?
It is wise that the youngest child is given the responsibility of asking the Four Questions. Young children greatly appreciate knowing exactly what their role is in any ritual, they love asking "Why?", and hearing the same answer in response every time is comforting, like a favorite story of which they never tire. The Four Questions remind them that behind all of the confusion there is still an objective reality that we all share, assures them a part to play in that reality, and confirms that adults can (at least some of the time) give helpful answers.
